  1. INTERCEPT B-17S NEAR HANNOVER
  2.  
  3. On April 7, 1945, a force of over one
  4. thousand heavy bombers took off from 
  5. England bound for destinations in
  6. northwest Germany.  Their targets
  7. included airfields, oil storage instal-
  8. lations, and armament industries.  
  9. Approximately twenty Me 262s and over 
  10. one hundred single engine fighters 
  11. attacked the bombers above Dummer and 
  12. Steinhuder Lakes.  About twelve jets and 
  13. fifty other fighters got through the 
  14. screen of Mustang escorts to hit the 
  15. bombers.  The German attack lasted about 
  16. 45 minutes, during which time at least 
  17. five B-17s were shot down or rammed by 
  18. FW 190s and Bf 109s.  At least three 
  19. bombers were shot down by Me 262s.

  21. On this day, bomber gunners made claims 
  22. of 41 enemy aircraft destroyed, with 16
  23. more probable or damaged.

  28. orders are to stop the formation of
  29. bombers nearing a munitions factory in
  30. Hannover.  Your flight of jets is armed
  31. with R4M 55-mm air-to-air rockets.  A
  32. pair of Bf 109s is also close by, with
  33. orders to intercept the Allied escort
  34. fighters.
